Through EC Technology, new radiotherapeitic agents will be developed. The company is a strong proponent of image guided therapy in addressing cancer and other dibilitating diseases. EC Technology is being used to couple therapeutic radionuclides, such as Rhenium-188 ("188 Re"), to the same targeting compounds used for radiodiagnostic purposes. The objective with each internal radiotherapeutic agent is to deliver the therapeutic radionuclide directly to the site of the tumor and trap the radionuclide within the cell nucleus of the tumor for a period sufficient to allow the effective release of radio-active energy. In addition, EC Technology will be used to create new targeted radioimmunotherapeutic drugs by coupling a therapeutic radionuclide to novel or FDA approved targeted drugs such as receptor specific monoclonal antibodies or anti-angiogenic drugs.
The trageting compound for the company's first radiodiagnostic agent is EC-DG. Because EC-DG is taken up into the cell nucleus and translocates in the DNA, labeling EC-DG with 188Re allows for the creation of an intracellular radiotherapeutic agent. 188 Re possesses excellent attributes for internal radiotherapy such as a beta emission of 2.1 MeV, an average tissue penetration of 3.5 mm, and a half-life of 17 hours. The targeting compound (EC-DG) should also allow 188 Re-EC-DG to localize in tumor metastases.
